They are a specialist unit, and used correctly, they can absolutely rack up kills. Don’t worry about the melee defense penalty, because the Salamis Marines will chase down ranged units like Slingers who are terrible in melee, or charge into enemies from behind and hopefully make them rout. The Salamis Marines have a special ability called Reckless Charge, which increases their speed and charge damage at a cost of melee defense for 45 seconds. However, there is a far better use for them. With their medium armor and good melee attack, they could serve as a decent frontline unit. This unit is a medium sword and shield infantry unit. Salamis Marines are a unit unique to Ajax’s faction. The Spearmen are not great attackers though, so they will need additional support. Line several units of them up next to each other, and they will do a decent job holding the line, especially if Ajax gets the Immovable Defense ability and activates it near them. As soon as possible, they should have around six units or so, as they will form the main battle line of the army. Spearmen are an excellent starting unit that players should recruit.
